A RESOLUTION

Commending Herschel Edwin Grice for outstanding lifetime achievements; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Herschel Edwin Grice, born December 3, 1925, in Evans County, Georgia, was drafted at age 18 for service in World War II; and

WHEREAS, he marched through France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, and Holland with the Third Army under the command of General Patton, and was a member of the valiant team that captured Werner von Braun, the German scientist who led development of the V-2 rocket; and

WHEREAS, he received a Purple Heart after being wounded in action in a firefight in Haagin, Germany; and

WHEREAS, after completing his tour of duty with the United States Army, he courageously reenlisted with the Air Force, where he served as a capable assistant in the electronics supply division to Mr. Porterfield, who wrote and published the book Mathematics Made Easy; and

WHEREAS, he was also assigned to the A and H bomb testing project known as "Project Ivy," where he was a valuable personal assistant to Albert Einstein; and

WHEREAS, he married Betty Wilson on August 31, 1946, and they will celebrate their fifty-eighth wedding anniversary this summer, after rearing a fine family of four children, Richard, David, LaJuan, and Glenda, who have presented their parents with six cherished grandchildren and six wonderful great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, he returned home to Claxton after completing his military service, continuing his distinguished career in electronics with Wise Electronics and by founding Claxton TV Center, which he operated with his partner Gary Tippins until his retirement after 35 years; and

WHEREAS, his prodigious knowledge of electronics, gained in part through working with Porterfield and Einstein, provided him a basis for becoming an early leader in the industry, a remarkable feat for a man who has only a sixth grade education; and

WHEREAS, after retiring, he became manager of the Claxton Airport through the Green Thumb program, and his service to his community and state as a goodwill ambassador to all who travel through the airport was recognized by an Outstanding Georgian Award from former Secretary of State Lewis Massey; and

WHEREAS, he has been an active and dedicated member of Union United Methodist Church, serving as lay minister and chairman of the board, and teaching Sunday school for more than 40 years.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Herschel Edwin Grice for a life of outstanding achievement, exemplary patriotism, and stellar public service.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Herschel Edwin Grice.
