A RESOLUTION

Commending Amelia Olga Rawls; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Amelia Olga Rawls has compiled an extraordinary list of accomplishments in academic, extracurricular, athletic, and civic realms in her impressive high school career; and

WHEREAS, this superlative scholar has received numerous awards and recognitions for her outstanding academic achievements, including being a Georgia Certificate of Merit Recipient, Harvard University Book Award Recipient, National Merit Finalist, National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar, National Honor Society Member, National Cum Laude Society Member, AP Scholar With Distinction, Caribbean Association Foundation Award Recipient, STAR Student selected from The Westminster Schools, and candidate for the 2003 Presidential Scholars Program; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Rawls has also displayed excellence in athletics, as the captain of her varsity tennis team, a member of the tennis team for all four years of high school, and a nationally ranked USTA tennis player; and

WHEREAS, her outstanding achievements also include extracurricular activities such as serving as the editor of The Westminster By-Line; and

WHEREAS, this energetic and dynamic individual selflessly devoted her time, talent, and energy toward the betterment of her school and community as evidenced by her membership on the Diversity Advisory Council, her participation as a volunteer English as a Second Language teacher for Hispanic immigrants, her service as a volunteer tutor of Hispanic children attending the Solidarity School, and her proposal, organization, and implementation of a fund-raising campaign for the nonprofit Hispanic Mission Tennis Camp, which served 50 underprivileged Hispanic students in July, 2002; and

WHEREAS, there is a bright future ahead for Amelia Olga Rawls, including plans to attend Princeton University, one of the premier educational institutions in the country, in Fall, 2003; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper for this body to honor the extraordinary accomplishments, intellectual acumen, and unsurpassed commitment to excellence of such an outstanding individual.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body heartily commend Amelia Olga Rawls for her outstanding commitment to excellence in her scholastic endeavors, thank her for her spirited public service, congratulate her on her numerous awards and recognitions, and express to her their sincerest best wishes for continued health, happiness, and success in the future.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Amelia Olga Rawls.
