Hecht was born and raised in Georgia. He is originally from Columbus, Georgia. Greg, his wife, Cherie, and daughter, Claire Grace, live in Jonesboro. Recently, Senator Hecht was recognized as one of the Top 40 Georgians under 40 by Georgia Trend Magazine.

In the State Senate, Greg Hecht authored and gained passage of The Elder Georgian and Disabled Adult Abuse Prevention Act, Criminal Background Checks for Daycare Employees, Foster Parents and Adoption Applicants, Taxpayer Notification Rights, Domestic Violence Prevention, and Electronic Commerce legislation. In the Senate, Hecht is Chairman of the Corrections, Correctional Institutions and Property Committee, Vice Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Chairman of the Criminal Justice Appropriations Subcommittee, and member of the Appropriations, Insurance and Labor, and Reapportionment Committees.

In the State House Greg Hecht authored Safe Schools, Ethics, Vote Fraud reduction, tough DUI, and Child Abuse protection legislation. Hecht was Chairman of the Elections Committee in the Governmental Affairs Committee and served on the Judiciary, and Banks and Banking Committees.

In 1999, the Georgia Council on Aging recognized Hecht as one of their two Legislators of the Year for the State of Georgia for "Professional Leadership and Exemplary Contributions on Behalf of Georgia's Elderly."

In 1998, Greg received the Speak up For a Child Legislative Award from Georgia CASA, for his legislation to protect children in the State House. The award was given to one Senator and one Representative in Georgia who best represented children's interests through legislation.

In 1997, the Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court awarded Greg the Court's first ever "Excellence in Community Service Award" in the State of Georgia for his 10 years as a Habitat for Humanity builder and the 1992-1993 Southern Crescent Habitat President, 7 years as a Boy Scouts leader, 9 years on the Alzheimers' Support Services Board, 10 years in Kiwanis and 6 years as a Partner in Education reader to our elementary schools.

For his undergraduate degree, Greg attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where in 1985 he was awarded the Chancellor's Award, denoted Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award "Given to One Man and One Woman in the Graduating Class Who Best Demonstrate Unselfish Interest In Human Welfare." Thereafter, Greg gained his law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law.

While at UGA, Greg served in the American Bar Association's legislative body, denoted "The House of Delegates." Greg was elected as one of the two law students in the United States, as a National Delegate, to represent the over 40,000 law students in the country in the ABA's House of Delegates.

Prior to serving in the State House, Greg served four years as an Assistant District Attorney, two years as a County Attorney, and served a three year term on his church's administrative board, Jonesboro United Methodist Church, where he is an adult Sunday School teacher. Presently, Greg maintains a small law firm with partner Steve Fincher, denoted, Fincher & Hecht, L.L.C. Greg Serves as a State Senator for portions of Clayton, Fulton, Douglas, and Fayette Counties.
