Senator Regina Thomas of Savannah was elected to the Georgia State Senate in a
special election on January 11, 2000. She served in the Georgia House of
Representatives, from1995 to1998, where her efforts were focused on education,
children=s issues, and welfare reform. She served as the assistant majority whip in
the House from 1997 - 1998.
Lieutenant Governor Mark Taylor appointed Senator Regina Thomas to serve as a
member of the Education; Corrections, Correctional Institutions, and Properties;
Veterans and Consumer Affairs; Defense, Science and Technology; and
Reapportionment Committees.
Senator Thomas is a native of Savannah. She graduated from A.E. Beach High
School, attended the Community College of Baltimore in Maryland and is currently a
tax associate for H & R Block.
Active in community affairs, Senator Thomas serves on the Board of Directors for
Medbank and the United Way of the Coastal Empire. She is a member of the State
Substance Abuse and the Court Committee; the CAP Board for Kemire; the
committee for Pathway to Teaching at Savannah State University; and the Circle of
Friends for Welcome. She also volunteers with the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights
Museum and the Chatham-Savannah Citizen Advocacy Office.
Senator Thomas and her husband, Ervin J. Thomas, Sr., a retired Savannah police
officer, are the parents of three sons and a daughter and seven grandchildren. They
attend the Liberty City Church of Christ in Savannah.
Senator Thomas represents the 2nd District, which includes portions of Chatham
County and the City of Savannah.
