A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Expressing regret at the passing of Curtis V. Cooper; and
1- 2 for other purposes.
1- 3 WHEREAS, Curtis V. Cooper was a well-known and highly
1- 4 respected civil rights leader in Savannah, Georgia, who
1- 5 significantly improved the quality of life; and
1- 6 WHEREAS, he was born and reared in Savannah and he graduated
1- 7 from Savannah State College with the hope of becoming a
1- 8 physician but lacked the funds. He later shaped the whole
1- 9 nature of health care for the poor in his native city; and
1-10 WHEREAS, he immersed himself in the civil rights struggle,
1-11 was a leader in the local NAACP Youth Council, and became
1-12 president of the Savannah Branch of the NAACP; and
1-13 WHEREAS, in the early 1970's he successfully secured the
1-14 funds for the establishment of a comprehensive health center
1-15 for the city's indigent and served as its executive
1-16 director. Under his able management, it grew into the
1-17 Westside-Urban Health Center, a major medical resource; and
1-18 WHEREAS, in 1984, he became one of the first black members
1-19 of Memorial Medical Center's board of directors where he
1-20 became chairman in 1995. He was the chairman of the Chatham
1-21 County Hospital Authority twice and he served on the Georgia
1-22 State Access to Health Care Commission and the Georgia State
1-23 Health Strategies Council; and
1-24 WHEREAS, Curtis V. Cooper truly made a significant
1-25 difference in the lives of countless citizens, and his
1-26 vision and leadership will be sorely missed.
1-27 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
1-28 REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body express their
1-29 regret at the passing of Curtis V. Cooper and convey their
1-30 sincerest sympathy to the members of his family.
1-31 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of
1-32 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
1-33 appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Curtis
1-34 V. Cooper.
