                             A RESOLUTION 
 
  1- 1  Expressing sympathy at the passing of Lewis H. Griner; and 
  1- 2  for other purposes. 
 
  1- 3  WHEREAS, on February 13, 1997, the State of Georgia lost a 
  1- 4  distinguished citizen, educator, and public servant with the 
  1- 5  passing of Lewis H. Griner; and 
 
  1- 6  WHEREAS, he was born on December 15, 1921; was a graduate of 
  1- 7  Claxton High School, Georgia Teachers College, and Florida 
  1- 8  State University; and did graduate work at the University of 
  1- 9  Georgia; and 
 
  1-10  WHEREAS, he was a distinguished and highly decorated P-47 
  1-11  Thunderbolt fighter pilot in the United States Army Air 
  1-12  Corps during World War II and flew numerous combat missions 
  1-13  in the Pacific; and 
 
  1-14  WHEREAS, he was a dedicated educator, having served as a 
  1-15  teacher at Collins High School in Tattnall County, as 
  1-16  principal of Hillview School in Tattnall County, as 
  1-17  principal of Marlow High School in Effingham County, as 
  1-18  principal of Dexter High School in Laurens County, as a 
  1-19  visiting teacher in Evans County, as principal of Claxton 
  1-20  Elementary School, and, from 1973 until his retirement in 
  1-21  1988, as Evans County Superintendent of Schools; and 
 
  1-22  WHEREAS, he was a loyal member of the First United Methodist 
  1-23  Church of Claxton, where he served as treasurer for 27 
  1-24  years, and was known for his civic involvement as a member 
  1-25  of the Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow; and 
 
  1-26  WHEREAS, he was the devoted husband of Mrs. Ruth Strickland 
  1-27  Griner and the father of an outstanding son, Lewis H. 
  1-28  Griner, Jr. 
 
  1-29  NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the 
  1-30  members of this body express their deepest regret at the 
  1-31  passing of Lewis H. Griner and extend their sincerest 
  1-32  sympathy to the members of his family. 
 
  1-33  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is 
  1-34  authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of 
  1-35  this resolution to the family of Lewis H. Griner.
