A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Paying tribute to Albert Parker; and for other purposes.
1- 2 WHEREAS, Albert Parker of Claxton, Georgia, was a prominent
1- 3 businessman, civic leader, and philanthropist who
1- 4 contributed substantially to the quality of life of his
1- 5 fellow citizens; and
1- 6 WHEREAS, he was a native of Evans County, born on January
1- 7 10, 1916, to Mr. and Mrs. Ira David Parker, and he began his
1- 8 lifelong career as a baker at age 11; and, in 1945, he
1- 9 purchased the Claxton Bakery and became the originator of
1-10 the World Famous Old Fashion Claxton Fruit Cake; and
1-11 WHEREAS, under his astute management, the company achieved
1-12 tremendous success, and each year it makes and ships
1-13 worldwide over five million pounds of fruitcake that bear
1-14 the name of the community he so proudly served; and
1-15 WHEREAS, his vision, leadership, and generosity influenced
1-16 numerous community organizations, especially Andrew College,
1-17 Epworth-by-the-Sea United Methodist Center, and the South
1-18 Georgia Methodist Foundation where he served as a member of
1-19 the respective boards of trustees; and
1-20 WHEREAS, he served on the Claxton City Council during the
1-21 1960's, and his keen judgment and commitment to principles
1-22 enabled the city to respond fairly and responsibly to the
1-23 social and political issues of the day; and
1-24 WHEREAS, the exemplary commitment he demonstrated throughout
1-25 his life to give back to his community through service and
1-26 assistance to others has left an indelible mark on Claxton,
1-27 Georgia, and endeared him to all who knew him.
1-28 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the
1-29 members of this body pay tribute to Albert Parker of
1-30 Claxton, Georgia, a truly distinguished Georgian, and convey
1-31 their admiration and respect for this gentleman to the
1-32 members of his family.
1-33 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is
1-34 authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of
1-35 this resolution to the family of Albert Parker.
