A RESOLUTION
1- 1 Endorsing the Read Across America campaign; and for other
1- 2 purposes.
1- 3 WHEREAS, Read Across America is a new campaign sponsored by
1- 4 the Georgia Association of Educators, the National Education
1- 5 Association, the Georgia Parent Teachers Association, and
1- 6 the National Parent Teachers Association to motivate
1- 7 children to read; and
1- 8 WHEREAS, the Georgia Association of Educators, the National
1- 9 Education Association, the Georgia Parent Teachers
1-10 Association, and the National Parent Teachers Association
1-11 are calling for every child in every community to be in the
1-12 company of a book on the evening of March 2, 1998, in
1-13 celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday; and
1-14 WHEREAS, it is beyond dispute that when children read
1-15 outside of school they do better in school; and
1-16 WHEREAS, it is also true that one of the most important
1-17 things parents can do is read to their children; and
1-18 WHEREAS, the members of this body stand firmly committed to
1-19 promoting reading as the catalyst for our students' future
1-20 academic success, their preparation for Georgia's jobs of
1-21 the future, and their ability to compete in a global
1-22 economy; and
1-23 WHEREAS, the members of this body believe in the importance
1-24 of community involvement in the education of our youth,
1-25 grounded in the principle that educational investment is the
1-26 key to the community's well-being and long-term quality of
1-27 life.
1-28 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
1-29 REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body call on the
1-30 citizens of Georgia to assure that every child is in a safe
1-31 place reading together with a caring adult on the evening of
1-32 March 2, 1998.
1-33 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the members of this body
1-34 enthusiastically endorse Read Across America, sponsored by
1-35 the Georgia Association of Educators, the National Education

2- 1 Association, the Georgia Parent Teachers Association, and
2- 2 the National Parent Teachers Association and urge our
2- 3 communities to engage in programs and activities to make
2- 4 Georgia's children the best readers in the world.
2- 5 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of
2- 6 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an
2- 7 appropriate copy of this resolution to the Georgia
2- 8 Association of Educators and the Georgia Parent Teachers
2- 9 Association.
