HR 1169 LC 25 0291 A RESOLUTION 1- 1 Honoring the Booker T. Washington High School Class of 1946; 1- 2 and for other purposes. 1- 3 WHEREAS, the members of the Booker T. Washington High School 1- 4 Class of 1946 will gather to celebrate their Fourth National 1- 5 Reunion on the occasion of the Fiftieth Anniversary of their 1- 6 graduation; and 1- 7 WHEREAS, in 1946, Booker T. Washington High School, headed 1- 8 by Mr. C. N. Cornell as principal, was the only high school 1- 9 in the City of Atlanta for African Americans; 1-10 WHEREAS, the Class of 1946 was the nineteenth to graduate 1-11 from Booker T. Washington High School and, with more than 1-12 500 members, was the largest graduating class in the history 1-13 of the school due to the return of many veterans of World 1-14 War II; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Booker T. Washington High School has a proud 1-16 history, and the members of the Class of 1946 have brought 1-17 much additional honor to this institution through their 1-18 endeavors and achievements in education, medicine, science, 1-19 politics, business, philanthropy, and many other areas, 1-20 thereby joining a long line of distinguished graduates of 1-21 Booker T. Washington High School; and 1-22 WHEREAS, many members of the Class of 1946 now serve as 1-23 mentors, supporters, and shining examples for the children 1-24 and grandchildren of their generation and contribute to the 1-25 education of today's students in many ways, including 1-26 support for college scholarships and the United Negro 1-27 College Fund; and 1-28 WHEREAS, members of the Booker T. Washington High School 1-29 Class of 1946 contribute to their communities through 1-30 various churches, civic groups, and other community outreach 1-31 programs; and 1-32 WHEREAS, members of the Booker T. Washington High School 1-33 Class of 1946 are of the same generation as the late Dr. 1-34 Martin Luther King, Jr., and are striving valiantly and 1-35 nobly to carry on his dream of non-violence and to live in 1-36 the spirit of Jesus Christ. -1- (Index) LC 25 0291 2- 1 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 2- 2 REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body honor the 2- 3 Booker T. Washington High School Class of 1946 on the 2- 4 occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of their graduation for 2- 5 their many achievements and for their great contributions to 2- 6 the welfare of this state. 2- 7 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of 2- 8 Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an 2- 9 appropriate copy of this resolution to the Booker T. 2-10 Washington High School Class of 1946. -2- (Index)
