HB 594 LC 9 8175 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT 1- 1 To amend Article 3 of Chapter 3 of Title 50 of the Official 1- 2 Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to state symbols, so as 1- 3 to designate Georgia as the Poultry Capital of the World; to 1- 4 repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes. 1- 5 WHEREAS, Georgia is recognized around the world as a leader 1- 6 in the poultry industry; and 1- 7 WHEREAS, poultry is the largest segment of Georgia 1- 8 agriculture and agribusiness and chickens are the largest 1- 9 single agricultural commodity in this state, producing over 1-10 $2,400,000,000.00 in farm income annually in this state; and 1-11 WHEREAS, the poultry industry is a major part of Georgia's 1-12 economy, is responsible for significant economic benefits 1-13 for countless Georgians through farm income, processing and 1-14 allied industries, and meetings and conventions, and pumps 1-15 over $10 billion annually through the Georgia economy; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Georgia annually serves as the host to the 1-17 International Poultry Trade Show, the largest poultry 1-18 convention in the world, and this outstanding event brought 1-19 over 24,000 visitors to Atlanta in 1995, including over 1-20 4,500 visitors from other countries, to view the exhibits of 1-21 over 1,000 exhibitors; and 1-22 WHEREAS, eighty-six Georgia counties each produce over $1 1-23 million worth of poultry each year and Georgia and the 1-24 states bordering Georgia produce 42 percent of the chickens 1-25 produced in the United States; and 1-26 WHEREAS, on an average day, Georgia processes approximately 1-27 18 million pounds of chicken, with additional value added 1-28 with the cut up and deboning of over 55 percent of such 1-29 chicken and the further processing of more than 30 percent 1-30 of such chicken; and 1-31 WHEREAS, Georgia has an average daily production of more 1-32 than 8 million table eggs, nearly 5 million hatching eggs, 1-33 and approximately 75 tons of turkey; and -1- (Index) LC 9 8175 2- 1 WHEREAS, if Georgia were a country, it would be the fifth 2- 2 leading poultry country in the world. 2- 3 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA: SECTION 1. 2- 4 Article 3 of Chapter 3 of Title 50 of the Official Code of 2- 5 Georgia Annotated, relating to state symbols, is amended by 2- 6 adding at the end of said article a new Code Section 50-3-70 2- 7 to read as follows: 2- 8 "50-3-70. (Index) 2- 9 The State of Georgia is designated as the Poultry Capital 2-10 of the World." SECTION 2. 2-11 All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are 2-12 repealed. -2- (Index)
